ACSM Bulletin 237
What's inside
From cover to cover, the first 2009 issue of the ACSM Bulletin, gives voice to larger-than life personalities of days past and present. Dave Zilkoski, the now retired director of NOAA/NGS, and Juliana Blackwell, the woman to succeed him in that nationally important position, "rub shoulders"--in print--with our 3rd and 16th presidents, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln, and with Charles Darwin, the English naturalist who was born on the same day as Lincoln, and who, like Jefferson, had a profound effect on the future course of science and education. Unusual in its angle--boundaries of right and wrong--John Hatzopoulos' article describes a different form of learning--in the human brain. Steve Douty, in "How can we be more inclusive," tries to engage our minds as well as our hearts. His article appears in a new column, Let's Discuss. The FIG Reporter traces the role of surveyors in society from the ancient world of Babylon and Egypt to today's members of FIG in an article written by Jan De Graeve. Fast forward to 2009, and we have Laurence Socci's report on the legislative outlook for 2009, an executive summary on FEMA's current flood mapping efforts, and a column written by Victor O'Schinnerer on whether to maintain professional liability insurance in the current climate of cost cutting. The Ask Dr. Map column is fun to read, as usual, but it has a competitor in the world of interesting info-nuggets--the NewsScan. However, whatever your reading preference, do not skip the announcement, Australia in 2010. Also must-read is a section "Introducing Leaders" in our community and two book reviews--of Geospatial Analysis, by Paul Young, and Placing History, by Jon Douglas. The long-standing commitment within our community to furthering learning and education in the geospatial sciences is manifested by two diverse contributions--an announcement from CaGIS about the successful completion of the CaGIS archive digitization project and an ad from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, seeking to attract new surveying and geomatics faculty to its programs.
Our returning advertisers in this issue were Barnette Industries, Magellan Professional, Topcon Posititioning Systems, and Trimble Navigation -- thank you all.
